When discussing politics I’ve noticed many people have beautiful ideas about the world they want to see, but very few think we can realistically create an equitable and pleasant future. With events like the electoral college putting Trump in office and having Roe V Wade at risk of being overturned (even though 69% of Americans support current abortion rights), it is easy to fall into the nihilistic trap of feeling like your voice doesn’t actually count. It is true the powerful have exuberant amounts of wealth and affluence and will do what they can to maintain it, BUT they will not win until every American gives up and accepts the way things are as unchangeable. We have entered a unique period of history where the voices of the people can be shared nationally and globally in seconds. WE MUST NOT TAKE THIS POWER FOR GRANTED. Generations before us had to rely on distributing information via print, but we can now reach millions with social media.
Individually we are a drop of water, but together we can create a waterfall. This November is a very important election. Our current Senator, Ron Johnson, has a long history of harming whoever he can for his own financial gain. He promised not to run again, but that (among many things) was a lie. Johnson bought his seat in 2010 with money from his corporate friends and $9 million of his family fortune. In 2017, Johnson claimed his support for the multimillion-dollar tax break had "nothing to do with any donor or discussions with them.” The change resulted in $79 million in tax savings in 2018 for two of Johnson's biggest donors. This is money that could be funding our schools, feeding our children, restoring our forests, or supporting our veterans. He is notorious for spreading misinformation, even claiming this December that "standard gargle, mouthwash, has been proven to kill the coronavirus."
